La Nina -
The Bureau of Meteorology announced the beginning of a La Niña on the 29th September 2020, which most likely means a wet summer period for eastern and northern regions.
La Niña is a recurring event in our weather cycle, not to be confused with the warmer El Niño, that operates over periods of one to eight years. It manifests when strong equatorial trade winds change ocean currents, drawing cool water up to the surface in parts of the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a pile up of warm surface water east of Australia. This leads to a boost in convection that has a pronounced effect on the global climate.
Every La Niña event is different, but according to the BOM this time Australia is likely to see:
- More rainfall in Eastern, Central, and Northern Australia
- Decreased daytime temperatures south of the tropics
- More tropical cyclones
- Increased chance of widespread flooding
- Longer, less intense heat waves in south east of Australia
- Earlier First Rains across Northern Australia
- Less risk of fires in areas that receive more rainfall
Northern Territory

Regional Update -
- A high slowly moving across southeastern Australia is directing a dry southeast wind flow across the south of the Territory, while a weak trough moving across the Arnhem District is causing showers and thunderstorms to gradually spread westwards across the Top End. These showers and storms will contract northwards from Thursday as some drier air arrives in the Top End. Temperatures in the south gradually rising late in the week ahead of trough moving through the Lasseter District on Saturday.
- With La Niña conditions, the weather is looking wetter than average over the next couple of months.

- A ridge lies to the south of the State. A broad surface trough extends through inland parts of the South West Land Division on Wednesday. A cold front will approach the southwest of the State during Thursday and will cross the South West Land Division and the southern Goldfields on Friday, before a ridge quickly develops over the southern parts of the State in the wake of the front on Saturday.

- A high pressure system centred over eastern Victoria will move slowly eastwards to be centred over the Tasman Sea on Thursday, then will then be slow moving through the later part of the week. A cold front will move over the south and west of the State during the weekend.
- Birdsville Inside Track Closed due to flooding (updated: 28/04/21).
- North East of state - Floods update, Most tracks have reopened. Birdsville Track - Mungeranie to Marree 4WD only (updated: 28/4/21).
- Road Works: Road Sealing - Strzelecki Track (472km). The SA government will seal the first 50-kilometres, Starting just north of Lyndhurst (until late 2021).

Regional Update -
- A high pressure system over southern Victoria will move slowly eastwards, reaching the Tasman Sea later on today as a weak cold front approaches Tasmania. The front will cross Tasmania during Thursday as the high becomes established over the Tasman Sea, with a broad ridge extending back over Victoria into Friday. A stronger cold front will cross the Bight on Saturday.
- Haunted Stream Track: Haunted Stream Track - Tambo Crossing is closed. DELWP are undertaking repairs. Reopening will be dependent on weather conditions.
- High Country: Seasonal Closures have finished, with tracks reopening from 30/11/20.

- A ridge of high pressure over Tasmania will move to the east this morning ahead of a cold front that will arrive in the west of the state late in the day. The cold front will clear to the east early Thursday as a high pressure ridge builds to the north of Tasmania during the day and remains over southern Australia for Friday and Saturday.
- Upgrading the Bruny Island Ferry Terminals. Construction of a second ferry berth to take place Sep 20 - Mar 21.

New South Wales/ ACT

Regional Update -
- A high pressure system over southeastern Australia is extending a ridge across New South Wales and will gradually move east, reaching the Tasman Sea later today. The high will then remain near stationary for a number of days. This pattern will bring some showers to the northern half of the coast during later this week and during the weekend.

La Niña -
More tropical Cyclones than normal. Prepare earlier - Rain expected a month earlier, more than 70% chance of above-average rainfall and increased flood risk.
Regional Update -
- A trough across northern Cape York Peninsula will continue to move north towards Torres Strait and weaken over the next day or two. A second weak trough extends from the northwest to the southern interior, and will drift slowly west. A large high over southeastern Australia extends a ridge along the east coast of Queensland. The high will move slowly east and reach the Tasman Sea by later today, before becoming slow-moving once more for several days. Winds along the central and southern Queensland coast will gradually turn to a more onshore direction as the high reaches the Tasman Sea. A series of upper level troughs will affect eastern Queensland late in the week and over the weekend.

- Planned building maintenance will be in progress between 16 March to 1 May in the following areas: Lake Garawongera; Lake Allom; Birrabeen Lookout; Binaroo walker’s camp; Ungowa; Coolooloi day use area. During this time, toilet blocks will remain partially OPEN.
- Most of the West coast is closed to beach driving (Updated 21/04/21).
- Look and listen for aircraft landing and taking off along the eastern beach. Follow direction from the ground control crew.
- South West QLD : Camerons Corner Road, Cameron Corner - Floods - Vehicle access is closed to all vehicles and will remain closed until further notice (updated: 28/04/21).
