Rebuilding Hema Maps’ iconic 76 Series LandCruiser: Part 1

Words Tim van Duyl Pics Capture Factory and Josh Hanger

In this multi-part series we follow the rebuild of Hema Maps’ iconic 76 Series Toyota LandCruiser. In the first episode, we go over the plan and detail the direction of the project. We'll also take a closer look at the issues that have developed after more than 250,000km of hard work. We’ll run through modifications being made to improve its reliability and safety for Map Patrol work in remote parts of Australia. Stay tuned for more updates on the rebuild process every two weeks.

Welcome to the first episode of our multi-part series on the rebuild of Hema Maps’ iconic 76 Series Toyota LandCruiser vehicle (LC76). In this episode we’ll be going through the plan and introducing a few of the people involved in the project.

Hema Maps purchased the LC76 around five years ago and transformed it into a Map Patrol vehicle, capable of tackling rough terrain. Since then, it has completed more than 250,000 kilometres of hard track work.

Justin Gill, Hema Maps National Product Manager, has been in charge of the LC76 for a couple of years, and after taking it for a test drive, it’s clear that the vehicle needs some serious TLC. The problem is that the wait times for a new 70 Series Toyota LandCruiser vehicle are very long and the iconic 1VD V8 is no longer offered new, so the team has decided to go with a refresh instead.

To start, we ran it on the dyno and saw 130kW and 450Nm, better than expected, though the injectors are noisy and it’s showing signs of wear, blowing smoke and leaking oil. The injectors are also going, so it’s time for a rebuild to ensure it remains reliable for remote work. Upon inspection, we found a rear main seal leak, dusting around the airbox and worn suspension. In the next episode, we’ll strip the car, remove the 1VD V8 and send it off for a rebuild. Geoff from the 4WD Workshop will guide us through the process.

One of the main issues with our LC76 is its gearbox, which has done 330,000km and is starting to make a bit of noise. It's due for an overhaul, which makes it the perfect opportunity to install a Terrain Tamer gear set. The clutch has also been replaced a few times but is starting to slip again, so it will need to be replaced again.

The suspension on the LC76 is a bit of a mismatch, with uprated springs, shocks and airbags in the rear. The plan is to reweigh the rig and install a complete suspension setup from Ironman. Previously, the diff has also been widened so the front and rear track widths match, but this happened more than 200,000km ago and is due for a refresh. While the team is working on the diff, they plan to upgrade to the latest ELocker from Harrop Technology and refresh the bearings and seals.

The brakes on the LC76 are fairly new, but they will be checked during the rebuild process. The vehicle’s engine, a 1VD, has had some work done to it, including a full exhaust and throttle controller. However, it’s starting to show its age and is using and dropping oil. The injectors are also on their way out and it’s losing power and blowing smoke. Given the demanding nature of Map Patrol work, the team doesn’t trust the engine (in its current condition) to be at the standard for reliable and safe work in remote parts of Australia.

Hema Maps is fortunate to be working with a number of fantastic partners on this project. First and foremost is Geoff and the team at the 4WD Workshop based in Seaford, Victoria, who will be coordinating and undertaking most of the repair work. Our Hema Tours Partner Adrenalin Offroad Centre in NSW has raised a hand to help with fit out. Diff Co are our differential experts and Harrop will be providing its industry-leading ELocker.

We will be using Monster Wheels and the tyre experts at Bob Jane T-Marts will be organising new Radar tyres and wheel alignment. For electrics, we are very excited to be getting access to REDARC’s new 12V Electrical Management System. For the lighting and the winch, we have opted for Bushranger 4x4 Gear. Darche is providing their latest awning and camping gear, and Ironman is supplying an excellent Alu-Cab rooftop tent. Safari is supplying a snorkel and airbox and MSA the Draw System and Fridge Slide. Finally, the team at the Idealseat Company will be giving the RECARO seats a refurbishment.
