GME launches new MT620GR PLB for remote Aussie travel

When you’re travelling through the remote corners of Australia, having reliable communication gear isn’t optional, it’s essential.

While this big, beautiful country of ours gives up plenty of excuses to unplug from the bustle of everyday life, the fact that only 27 per cent of it has phone coverage can pose a danger when you’re travelling in the outback or through the depths of the Victorian High Country, hours from friends, family and emergency services.

That’s where GME’s latest innovation, the MT620GR Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) comes in.

Designed and built in Australia, the MT620GR is GME’s most advanced beacon to date, introducing Return Link Service (RLS) technology for the first time in the brand’s PLB range. This feature allows users to receive confirmation that their distress signal has been received and processed, a reassuring step forward when help could be hundreds of kilometres away.

The MT620GR pairs with the new GME Accusat Connect App (available for both Android and iPhone), allowing travellers to easily check the beacon’s operational status via Near Field Communication (NFC). It’s a practical improvement for anyone who likes to know their safety gear is ready to go before heading off-grid.

Built for Australia’s tough and varied conditions, the MT620GR features a compact, buoyant design and meets IP68 waterproof and dustproof standards. It includes an integrated Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver for precise positioning and a 121.5 MHz homing transmitter to assist search and rescue teams once they’re in range.

COSPAS-SARSAT certified for global operation, the MT620GR ensures that distress alerts and RLS work anywhere in the world. With a seven-year battery life and six-year warranty, it’s built for long-term reliability, no matter how far off-grid you go.

Commenting on the new release, GME’s safety expert Tony Crooke said: “From the Cape to the High Country and everywhere in between, more Aussies are exploring remote parts of the country, often far beyond mobile reception. When something goes wrong off-grid, the right safety tech can be life-saving.

“The MT620GR sets a new standard for personal safety. The addition of RLS gives adventurers priceless reassurance that their distress signal has been received, while the app connectivity makes pre-trip checks simple. Backed by GME’s Australian engineering, this beacon gives Australians peace of mind, no matter where their adventures take them.”

GME has been a trusted name in communication technology since it produced its first emergency position indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) in 1979. The MT620GR continues that legacy, combining rugged reliability with modern digital safety features that make a real difference when travelling in Australia’s most isolated regions.
