Australia

Border Update -

Closed to International Visitors (ex New Zealand)
  • Australia’s international borders are closed. Only Australian citizens, residents and immediate family members can travel to Australia.

Restrictions on New Zealand Visitors
  • From 19 April 2021, quarantine-free travel between Australia and New Zealand will commence.
  • Known as green zone travel, it will enable the movement of people between the two countries in a way that is safe and ensures that public health requirements are met.

La Nina -

The Bureau of Meteorology announced the beginning of a La Niña on the 29th September 2020, which most likely means a wet summer period for eastern and northern regions. 

La Niña is a recurring event in our weather cycle, not to be confused with the warmer El Niño, that operates over periods of one to eight years. It manifests when strong equatorial trade winds change ocean currents, drawing cool water up to the surface in parts of the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a pile up of warm surface water east of Australia. This leads to a boost in convection that has a pronounced effect on the global climate.

Every La Niña event is different, but according to the BOM this time Australia is likely to see:

  • More rainfall in Eastern, Central, and Northern Australia
  • Decreased daytime temperatures south of the tropics
  • More tropical cyclones
  • Increased chance of widespread flooding
  • Longer, less intense heat waves in south east of Australia
  • Earlier First Rains across Northern Australia
  • Less risk of fires in areas that receive more rainfall

 

 

Northern Territory

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • All arrivals to the Northern Territory must complete 14 days of supervised quarantine at your own expense, if you have recently been in an active declared COVID-19 hot spot. Currently, LGAs in Greater Melbourne and all LGAs in ACT and NSW are active hot spots (updated 18/08/21).
  • Travellers to the NT need a NT Border Entry Application
  • Travellers to NT from NSW, Greater Melbourne LGAs or ACT:  Entry is now strictly prohibited from current hotspots or public exposure sites without a prior approved exemption.
  • QLD:
    - The CHO has repealed the hotspot of the Cairns LGA
  • VIC:
    - Greater Melbourne LGAs are an active hotspot. Rural Victoria is not a hotspot.
  • Vaccination status: If a person is fully vaccinated they are still required to follow all test and quarantine directions.

No Internal Travel Restrictions
  • There are no internal restrictions although any non-residents wanting to go into a remote community must still follow all the requirements of land councils and local communities, including checking if you need a land council permit to go there.

Regional Update -

  • A strong high pressure system over Southern SA extends a firm ridge over central and northern Australia. This ridge will weaken from today as the high moves east, with lighter and more humid winds developing across the north for the remainder of the week. Becoming warmer across southern and central parts of the Territory this week ahead of a weak trough that will move across the south during Saturday.
  • ‘The Dry’ season has started running from May- Oct, but with La Niña conditions, the weather is looking wetter than average over the next couple of months.

Western Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Before travelling to WA, complete a mandatory G2G PASS registration and declaration.
    Travellers from all states must look at the ‘State Risk Ratings’. NSW, QLD, SA, VIC are classified as ‘Medium risk’, ACT is Classified as ‘Low risk’.
  • WA has introduced a hard border with SA, NSW, QLD and VIC  following the evolving COVID-19 situations and outbreak and you are not allowed to travel without an exemption.
  • All arrivals into WA from QLD since Saturday 19 June 2021 who have been to any of the listed exposure sites during the relevant times are required to:
    - get a COVID-19 test immediately (within 48 hours)
    - self-quarantine for 14 days after date of exposure
    - present for a day 11 COVID-19 test
    - wear masks when transiting to self-quarantine premises or to get a COVID-19 test
  • Very low risk states and territories 
    (No community cases in 28 days)
    - Not required to quarantine
    - Currently includes TAS and NT.
  • Low risk states and territories
    (Less than 5 community cases per day on a 14-day rolling average)
    - Must self-quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises
    - Must present for a COVID-19 test on Day 11 if still in WA
    - Currently includes SA.
  • Medium risk states and territories
    - Must self-quarantine/quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises.
    - No entry without an exemption through G2G PASS.
    - Covid tests required.
    - Must wear face masks until at an isolation location.
    - Currently Includes VIC, QLD, ACT.
  • High risk states and territories
    - Travellers are not permitted to enter without an approval through G2G PASS.
    - if permitted to enter, travellers must self-quarantine/quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises.
    - Covid tests required.
    - Currently Includes NSW.

Internal Travel Restrictions
  • Travel is now permitted throughout all regions within WA, except for entry into remote Aboriginal communities.

    • A broad trough extends from the Kimberley coast to the inland Pilbara.
    • Fire Risk:

      • North Kimberley Coast: Very High

    • Warm temps (reaching low 30s) expected.
    • Road Alert: Road Open to High Clearance 4WDs and trucks under 25t ONLY. Gibb River Rd from Mount Barnett to Kalumburu T/O - Flooding (Updated: 16-06-21).
  • Pilbara: 

    • A broad trough extends from the Kimberley coast to the inland Pilbara.
    • Fire Risk:

      • East Pilbara Coast: Low-Moderate
      • West Pilbara Coast: High
      • East Pilbara Inland: Low-Moderate
      • Ashburton Inland: Low-Moderate
      • Exmouth Gulf Coast: Low-Moderate
    • Mostly sunny throughout the week, into the mid 20s to low 30s.
    • Road Flooded: Nanutarra Munjina Rd - Nameless Valley Dr and Bingarn Rd - Flooding - Open with Extreme Caution - 4WDs Only -  (Updated: 21-07-21).
  • South West WA:

    • A broad trough extends from the Pilbara towards the south coast and will move east across the State on Wednesday. On Thursday, a cold front will cross the southwest of the State, followed by a ridge of high pressure developing over southern parts in its wake.
    • Fire Risk:

      • Geographe: Low-Moderate
      • Leeuwin: Low-Moderate
      • Nelson: Low-Moderate
    • Quite extensive road works being undertaken on the South Coast Highway over October and November.
    • Road Closed: Muir Hwy closed at the Kent River Bridge, Perillup - Flooding. Road to remain CLOSED to all vehicles, Repairs to the side track are progressing. Detour available.

South Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Travellers are permitted to enter providing they have completed the Cross Border Travel Registration Form prior to entry into SA.
  • Border restrictions are in place. From 16 August 2021, any person arriving in South Australia who has been in NSW, ACT, VIC or QLD, are currently prohibited from entering SA - Exceptions apply.

La Niña -

More rainfall during spring and summer, wetter soils and an increased chance of flash floods. Reduced bushfire risk with reduced extreme heat waves. More rainfall expected in the north/central areas of South Australia.


Regional Update -

  • A high 1028 hPa over the southern SA will move rapidly eastwards to be over the Tasman Sea during the day today. A cold front will move across the west and south of the State on Friday and a more significant cold front will move over the west and south of the State on Sunday and the northeast on Monday morning.
  • Birdsville Inside Track Closed due to flood damage (updated: 11/08/21).
  • North East of state - Floods update, Most tracks have reopened. Cordillo Downs Road - Arrabury turn off to SA/QLD Border, Open to 4WD and Heavy Vehicles (updated: 18/08/21).
  • Road Works: Road Sealing - Strzelecki Track (472km). The SA government will seal the first 50-kilometres, Starting just north of Lyndhurst (until late 2021).

Victoria

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • From 11:59pm on 26 February 2021, you will need to apply for a permit to enter Victoria from anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.?Apply for a permit at the Service Victoria?website.
  • NSW and ACT is now a ‘Extreme Risk Zone’ under Victoria’s Travel Permit System.
  • Greater Darwin (NT), Katherine(NT),  and Cairns (QLD) LGAs are now Red Zones.
  • Greater Brisbane LGA is now a Orange Zone.
  • and SA has been downgraded to a Green Zone.

No Internal Travel Restrictions
  • Until 11.59pm 2-SEP-21, Metropolitan Melbourne is under lockdown and heavy restrictions apply including a maximum of 5km from residences travel restriction (exemptions can apply).
  • Restrictions in regional Victoria have eased, and people can leave their home for any reason. There is no limit on the distance they can travel from home.

Regional Update - 

  • A high pressure system will move over southern NSW today, reaching the Tasman Sea early Thursday. A cold front will build over the Bight on Thursday and move east across Victoria on Friday and into Saturday, sliding to the southeast as it does so. A second ridge of high pressure extends over northern Victoria on Saturday.
  • Haunted Stream Track: Haunted Stream Track - Tambo Crossing is closed. DELWP are undertaking repairs. Reopening will be dependent on weather conditions.
  • Extensive road closures throughout the South East of the state. A weather event has resulted in widespread floods. Drive to conditions. Some detours in place (updated: 11/06/21).
  • High Country: Seasonal Closures are in effect, Check the list of tracks to close from the 17th June 2021.

Tasmania

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Travellers who have only spent time in a low-risk area in the 14 days before arriving in Tasmania do not need to quarantine when they arrive, (excluding the high-risk areas).
  • Low-risk:
    - NT, QLD, SA, WA
  • Medium Risk:
    - (N/A)
  • High Risk:
    - ACT, SA*, WA*, NSW, VIC, NT* QLD(Greater Brisbane and Cairns)*
    *= a number of premises have also been declared as high-risk

Regional Update -

  • A high pressure system will move over southeast mainland Australia today, with a westerly flow continuing over Tasmania ahead of an approaching cold front. The cold front will pass south of Tasmania early Thursday morning, with the high to move eastwards over the Tasman Sea as winds tend northerly. A weakening cold front will cross Tasmania late Friday as a low moves to the southwest of the state in a north to northwesterly flow. The next cold front will cross Tasmania during Saturday in a fresh to strong and gusty west to northwesterly flow.
  • Upgrading the Bruny Island Ferry Terminals. Construction of a second ferry berth to take place Dec 20 - Jul 21.

New South Wales/ ACT

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Travelers from VIC, QLD and SA are not allowed to enter into NSW. Guidelines in place for travellers from interstate hotspots. Updated 11-08-21
  • You must complete an NSW entry declaration form if you are entering NSW after 5pm on 27 April 2021, and in the previous 14 days have been in any interstate hotspot suburbs.

Internal Travel Restrictions
  • There is currently a 10km limit on the distance that a person may travel in Sydney, NSW Health recommends non-essential domestic travel should be avoided. 
  • Stay-at-home orders are in place across the state of NSW until 12.01am Sunday 22 August 2021.

Regional Update - 

  • A high pressure system over South Australia extends a ridge across the state promoting settled conditions as it slowly moves east during the week. By Thursday the high is over the Tasman Sea allowing a cold front to push into the state's west on Friday and Saturday. The front isn't expected to have a major impact on the state's weather as the ridge predominates.
  • Flood Closures reopening throughout the North West of state between Broken Hill - Wanaaring - and Cameron’s Corner - Exercise caution - some closures in place. (Updated: 11/08/21).

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
