Australia

Border Update -

Closed to International Visitors (ex New Zealand)

  • Australia’s international borders are closed. Only Australian citizens, residents and immediate family members can travel to Australia

Restrictions on New Zealand Visitors

  • From 19 April 2021, quarantine-free travel between Australia and New Zealand will commence.
  • Known as green zone travel, it will enable the movement of people between the two countries in a way that is safe and ensures that public health requirements are met.

La Nina -

The Bureau of Meteorology announced the beginning of a La Niña on the 29th September 2020, which most likely means a wet summer period for eastern and northern regions. 

La Niña is a recurring event in our weather cycle, not to be confused with the warmer El Niño, that operates over periods of one to eight years. It manifests when strong equatorial trade winds change ocean currents, drawing cool water up to the surface in parts of the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a pile up of warm surface water east of Australia. This leads to a boost in convection that has a pronounced effect on the global climate.

Every La Niña event is different, but according to the BOM this time Australia is likely to see:

  • More rainfall in Eastern, Central, and Northern Australia
  • Decreased daytime temperatures south of the tropics
  • More tropical cyclones
  • Increased chance of widespread flooding
  • Longer, less intense heat waves in south east of Australia
  • Earlier First Rains across Northern Australia
  • Less risk of fires in areas that receive more rainfall


Northern Territory

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

  • All arrivals to the Northern Territory must complete 14 days of supervised quarantine at your own expense, if you have recently been in an active declared COVID-19 hot spot. Currently some LGAs in VIC are an active hot spot (updated 20/07/21).
  • NSW:
    - Travellers to NT from NSW since 19 May 2021 or after who have been to any of the locations listed as ‘COVID-19 case locations’, may need to isolate/quarantine.
  • VIC:
    - Travellers to NT from VIC after 12 May 2021 must check VIC Health website.
    - Travellers to NT from VIC before 00:01 on 27 May 2021, who have been to a 'Tier 1 site' must also quarantine.
  • SA:
    - The CHO has declared a number of hotspots across SA for the purposes of travel to the NT.
  • Vaccination status: If a person is fully vaccinated they are still required to follow all test and quarantine directions.

No Internal Travel Restrictions

  • There are no internal restrictions although any non-residents wanting to go into a remote community must still follow all the requirements of land councils and local communities, including checking if you need a land council permit to go there.

Regional Update -

  • A high moving from the Bight into southeast Australia today will maintain a ridge over central and northern parts of the continent, with dry southeasterly winds remaining across the Territory. A vigorous trough will move across southern NT on Thursday with very warm and gusty winds. A new ridge will begin to develop across southern NT from Friday.
  • ‘The Dry’ season has started running from May- Oct, but with La Niña conditions, the weather is looking wetter than average over the next couple of months.

Western Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

  • Before travelling to WA, complete a mandatory G2G PASS registration and declaration.
    Travel from all states, but NSW, into WA are now classified as ‘Very Low risk’. NSW is classified as ‘Medium risk’, Vic is Classified as ‘Low risk’.
  • WA has introduced a hard border with NSW following the evolving COVID-19 situation and outbreak and you are not allowed to travel without an exemption.
  • All arrivals into WA from QLD since Saturday 19 June 2021 who have been to any of the listed exposure sites during the relevant times are required to:
    - get a COVID-19 test immediately (within 48 hours)
    - self-quarantine for 14 days after date of exposure
    - present for a day 11 COVID-19 test
    - wear masks when transiting to self-quarantine premises or to get a COVID-19 test
  • Very low risk states and territories 
    (No community cases in 28 days)
    - Not required to quarantine
    - Currently includes TAS and NT.
  • Low risk states and territories
    (Less than 5 community cases per day on a 14-day rolling average)
    - Must self-quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises
    - Must present for a COVID-19 test on Day 11 if still in WA
    - Currently includes SA and ACT.
  • Medium risk states and territories
    - Must self-quarantine/quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises.
    - No entry without an exemption through G2G PASS.
    - Covid tests required.
    - Must wear face masks until at an isolation location.
    - Currently Includes NSW, VIC, QLD.

  • Travel is now permitted throughout all regions within WA, except for entry into remote Aboriginal communities.

    • A trough over the western Pilbara will move east today and on Thursday. A new ridge will develop over central parts of the State on Friday.

    • A trough over the western Pilbara will move east today and on Thursday. A new ridge will develop over central parts of the State on Friday.
    • Fire Risk:
      - East Pilbara Coast: Low-Moderate
      - West Pilbara Coast: Low-Moderate
      - East Pilbara Inland: Low-Moderate
      - Ashburton Inland: Low-Moderate
      - Exmouth Gulf Coast: Low-Moderate
    • Mostly sunny throughout the week, into the mid 20s to low 30s.
    • Road Flooded: Nanutarra Munjina Rd - Nameless Valley Dr and Bingarn Rd - Flooding - Open with Extreme Caution - 4WDs Only -  (Updated: 21-07-21).
  • South West WA:

    • A rain band and an associated low pressure system is expected to move over the southwest of the State today, with a high pressure ridge developing over central parts of the State on Thursday. A cold front will move across southern parts on Friday.
    • Fire Risk: Geographe: Low-Moderate
      Leeuwin: Low-Moderate
      Nelson: Low-Moderate
    • Quite extensive road works being undertaken on the South Coast Highway over October and November.
    • Road Closed: Muir Hwy closed at the Kent River Bridge, Perillup - Flooding. Road to remain CLOSED to all vehicles, Repairs to the side track are progressing. Detour available.

South Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

  • Travellers are permitted to enter providing they have completed the Cross Border Travel Registration Form prior to entry into SA.
  • From 19 July 2021, any person arriving in South Australia who has been in the state of NSW, ACT, VIC or Greater Brisbane, are currently prohibited from entering SA - Exceptions apply.

No Internal Travel Restrictions

  • Travel within South Australia is unrestricted. People are free to visit regional areas.

La Niña -

More rainfall during spring and summer, wetter soils and an increased chance of flash floods. Reduced bushfire risk with reduced extreme heat waves. More rainfall expected in the north/central areas of South Australia.

Regional Update -

  • A high pressure system is strengthening over South Australia ahead of a front that moves across the west on Thursday as a low moves over the Bight. This front will move across the east on Friday, ahead of a more vigorous front on Saturday.
  • Birdsville Inside Track Closed due to flooding (updated: 25/06/21).
  • North East of state - Floods update, Most tracks have reopened. Cordillo Downs Road - Arrabury turn off to SA/QLD Border, Open to 4WD and Heavy Vehicles (updated: 21/07/21).
  • Road Works: Road Sealing - Strzelecki Track (472km). The SA government will seal the first 50-kilometres, Starting just north of Lyndhurst (until late 2021).

Victoria

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

Regional Update - 

  • A high pressure system centred near Adelaide will move over western NSW today, extending a ridge south over Victoria. The high is forecast to cross NSW on Thursday, with winds tending northerly as a low pressure system crosses the Bight. The low is forecast to weaken and move across northern Victoria on Friday. A northwesterly stream is expected to strengthen during Saturday as the next series of fronts begin to move across Victoria.
  • Haunted Stream Track: Haunted Stream Track - Tambo Crossing is closed. DELWP are undertaking repairs. Reopening will be dependent on weather conditions.
  • Extensive road closures throughout the South East of the state. A weather event has resulted in widespread floods. Drive to conditions. Some detours in place (updated: 11/06/21).
  • High Country: Seasonal Closures are in effect, Check the list of tracks to close from the 17th June 2021.

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

  • Travellers who have only spent time in a low-risk area in the 14 days before arriving in Tasmania do not need to quarantine when they arrive, (excluding the high-risk areas).

    - VIC, SA, NSW

Regional Update -

  • A cold front over the Tasman Sea leaves a fresh southwesterly stream over Tasmania which will tend westerly today as a high moves over South Australia. As the high drifts eastwards to the Tasman Sea later on Thursday, the flow will become northwesterly, and a low will move over South Australia. The low will weaken as it moves over New South Wales on Friday, while another cold front moves over the western Bight. The stream will freshen over Tasmania on Saturday, with an embedded trough to cross later in the day.
  • Lake Mackenzie road, reopened South Eastwards from Mersey Forrest Road (C171) intersection, to Lake Mackenzie.
  • Upgrading the Bruny Island Ferry Terminals. Construction of a second ferry berth to take place Dec 20 - Jul 21.

New South Wales/ ACT

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

  • Travelers from other Australian States and Territories, who have not been overseas, may enter after applying for a permit (Excluding ACT and TAS). Guidelines in place for travellers from interstate hotspots. Updated 21-07-21
  • You must complete an NSW entry declaration form if you are entering NSW after 5pm on 27 April 2021, and in the previous 14 days have been in any interstate hotspot suburbs.

Internal Travel Restrictions

  • There is currently a 10km limit on the distance that a person may travel in Sydney, NSW Health recommends non-essential domestic travel should be avoided. 
  • Stay-at-home orders are being introduced until at least 30 July for those who live in Greater Sydney including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour.

Regional Update - 

  • A cold front is moving east across the east coast and will clear the northeast by midday, cool and windy conditions will extend throughout in the wake of this front. Following this, a high pressure system will pass quickly overhead later today and Thursday, as a new series of troughs and fronts approach from the west. These will bring another dose of wet and windy weather at the end of the week.
  • Flood Closures reopening throughout the North West of state between Broken Hill - Wanaaring - and Cameron’s Corner - Exercise caution - some closures in place. (Updated: 25/06/21).

Queensland

Border Update -

La Niña -

More tropical Cyclones than normal. Prepare earlier - Rain expected a month earlier, more than 70% chance of above-average rainfall and increased flood risk.

Regional Update -

  • A large high in the Great Australian Bight extends a strengthening ridge across the state. The high will move east across southeast Australia from today, maintaining the ridge over Queensland. A low will develop in the southern Tasman Sea today and combine with the high, enhancing winds about the southeast and directing another burst of cool and dry air across much of the state. These conditions will ease on Thursday as the high moves into the Tasman Sea. A trough will move into the southwest of the state on Friday, moving eastwards across the south of the state to be offshore early on the weekend.
  • Cape York: Peninsula Developmental Road - at Archer River Road.
  • Fraser Island:

    • Areas of concern - Eurong beachfront, Eli Creek, Maheno, Lake McKenzie, Waddy Point beachfront Wathumba and Orchid Beach. Due to increased human-wongari interactions, extra vigilance is required in these areas.
