Australia

Border Update -

Closed to international visitors (ex New Zealand)

Australia’s international borders are closed. Only Australian citizens, residents and immediate family members can travel to Australia.

Restrictions on New Zealand visitors

New Zealand visitors (from non-hotspot regions) are permitted to travel to Australia without requiring quarantine except if they are visiting Queensland, Tasmania and WA.

La Nina -

The Bureau of Meteorology announced the beginning of a La Niña on the 29th September, which most likely means a wet spring and summer period for eastern and northern regions. 

La Niña is a recurring event in our weather cycle, not to be confused with the warmer El Niño, that operates over periods of one to eight years. It manifests when strong equatorial trade winds change ocean currents, drawing cool water up to the surface in parts of the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a pile up of warm surface water east of Australia. This leads to a boost in convection that has a pronounced effect on the global climate.

Every La Niña event is different, but according to the BOM this time Australia is likely to see:

  • More rainfall in Eastern, Central, and Northern Australia
  • Decreased daytime temperatures south of the tropics
  • More tropical cyclones
  • Increased chance of widespread flooding
  • Longer, less intense heat waves in south east of Australia
  • Earlier First Rains across Northern Australia
  • Less risk of fires in areas that receive more rainfall



Northern Territory

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

All arrivals to the Northern Territory must complete 14 days of supervised quarantine at your own expense, if you have recently been in an active declared COVID-19 hot spot (currently Melbourne Metro Areas). No quarantine required for the rest of Australia and NZ (from non-hotspot areas)

No internal travel restrictions

There are no internal restrictions although any non-residents wanting to go into a remote community must still follow all the requirements of land councils and local communities, including checking if you need a land council permit to go there.

Regional Update -

  • A near stationary trough extends over the central districts, maintaining isolated showers and thunderstorms across the north and west of the Territory. Temperatures over the southern districts will rise again from today as another trough develops over Western Australia. Hot to very hot temperatures will extend across much of the Territory later in the week, as a low intensity heatwave develops again.
  • With La Niña conditions, the weather is looking wetter than average over the next couple of months.
  • Jim Jim Road - Flooding - Road Closed - Between Arnhem Highway intersection and Kakadu Highway intersection.

Western Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

From Saturday, 14 November, WA will change its border policy. Every state and territory in Australia will need to record a 14-day rolling average of less than 5 community cases per day of COVID-19 for Western Australia’s new controlled interstate border arrangement to be introduced.

Very low risk states and territories

(No community cases in 28 days)

  • Not required to quarantine
  • Currently includes TAS, QLD, ACT and NT

Low risk states and territories

(Less than 5 community cases per day on a 14-day rolling average)

  • Must self-quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises
  • Must present for a COVID-19 test on Day 11 if still in WA currently includes NSW and VIC.

Medium risk states and territories

  • Currently includes SA
  • Must not enter WA unless exempted.
  • Must quarantine for 14 days, unless exempted.

Internal travel restrictions

Travel is now permitted throughout all regions within WA, except for entry into remote Aboriginal communities.

Regional Update - 


  • Kimberley:




      • A broad trough lies from the Kimberley to the North Interior, through inland Pilbara, and into the Gascoyne.
      • Showers/thunderstorms expected throughout the week.
      • Great Northern Hwy - Line Marking from Willare to 53 km south of Warmun.
  • Pilbara: 


      • A broad trough lies from the Kimberley to the North Interior, through inland Pilbara, and into the Gascoyne.
      • Showers/thunderstorms expected throughout the week.
      • Tom Price - Nanutarra-Munjina Rd both directions from Tom Price-Paraburdoo Rd to Bingarn Rd - Flooding.
  • South West WA:


      • A trough over the Goldfields will continue to move east today, with a new high pressure system developing south of the State. Another trough will develop near the west coast by early Thursday morning and will begin to move east through the South West Land Division from early afternoon and into the Goldfields on Friday. A ridge of high pressure develops to the south of the State in the wake of trough on Friday.
      • Quite extensive road works being undertaken on the South Coast Highway over October and November.

South Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

Travellers from Victoria are not permitted to enter SA. No restrictions on other Australian travellers and those from NZ (who haven't been in a COVID-19 hotspot area). SA and Victorian cross-border community members will be able to travel within a 70 km border zone, without needing a reason to do so. Also Victorians looking to relocate to South Australia permanently or for work purposes, providing criteria around accommodation and/or employment in SA can be met can enter but must quarantine for 14 days.

Internal travel restrictions


Travel is permitted throughout all regions within SA, except for entry into remote Aboriginal communities (restrictions imposed from 17 Nov to 8 Dec).

Regional Update -

  • A weak trough of low pressure will extend over the west and south of the State later today, followed by a high pressure system moving south of SA on Thursday and over the Tasman Sea on Friday. Another trough will develop near the coasts on Friday, then extend northeastwards on Saturday, reaching a line near Marla to Yunta in the evening.
  • Birdsville Inside Track Closed due to flooding (updated: 25/11/20).
  • Far North East of SA, Floods closures reopened, some tracks with caution.
  • Road Works: Road Sealing - Strzelecki Track (472km). The SA government will seal the first 50-kilometres, Starting just north of Lyndhurst (until late 2021).
  • Bore Track South – Closed until further notice.
  • Open to 4WD - Cullyamurra Waterhole, Burke’s Grave, Queerbidie, Policemans.

Border Update -

Regional Update - 

  • Haunted Stream Track: Haunted Stream Track - Tambo Crossing is closed. DELWP are undertaking repairs. Re-opening will be dependent on weather conditions.
  • High Country: Seasonal Closures in place. Reopenings to take place on 29/10/20 and 30/11/20.
  • A broad area of high pressure over Victoria and southern NSW will move over the Tasman Sea today as a cold front moves over Tasmania, extending a weak trough into Victoria tonight. The trough will clear eastwards on Thursday morning as another high centre rapidly crosses the waters south of the Bight. The high will cross Tasmania Thursday night, becoming established over the Tasman Sea on Friday as another trough moves into western Victoria, before crossing the State on Saturday.

Tasmania

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions


People travelling from all states (plus NZ) except South Australia are able to travel to Tasmania without being required to quarantine but are required to register their travel via the Tas e-travel system.

No internal travel restrictions

No restrictions on internal state travel.

Regional Update -

  • A high drifting eastwards over the Tasman Sea will bring a warm northwesterly stream to Tasmania today before a trough crosses the state and a cold front passes near the south late evening. The front will move to the east early Thursday, with a trough to linger about the northeast until a high moves over Tasmania in the evening. Warm northerlies will return to Tasmania on Friday, as this high moves over the Tasman Sea, before a trough moves over the state in the evening. The trough will linger about the north on Saturday, with a cooler west to south westerly stream over the south.
  • Pinnacle Road closed at The Springs gate, until 26/11/20, due to scheduled maintenance.
  • Upgrading the Bruny Island Ferry Terminals. Construction of a second ferry berth to take place Sep 20 - Mar 21.

New South Wales/ ACT

Border Update -

No Interstate Restrictions


No interstate travel restrictions. Borders with South Australia remain open but all arrivals from there are being screened.

No internal travel restrictions

There is currently no limit on the distance that a person may travel, however NSW Health recommends non-essential domestic travel should be avoided.

Regional Update - 

  • A high pressure system is building over the Tasman Sea today where it looks set to remain until the weekend. This pattern will allow heat to build over the state for the coming days, leading to severe heatwave conditions on the weekend. The next trough is forecast to enter the far west on Saturday.
  • Cameron Corner: Omicron to Cameron Corner - Flooding expected.
  • Broken Hill To Menindee: Tandou Rd/Old Pooncarie Rd - Adverse weather forecast (updated: 18/11/20).
  • Tibooburra to Wompah Gate, Silver City Highway:  Adverse Weather. (Updated: 25/11/2020).
  • High Country: Seasonal Closures in place.
  • Sturt National Park: Toona Gate Road is open with caution to 4WD's only.

Queensland

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions


QLD has temporarily imposed border restrictions with Victoria, specific parts of South Australia (including Adelaide) and 32 NSW Local Government Area’s (Greater Sydney). The border restrictions for Victoria and New South Wales are due to ease on 1 December.

No internal travel restrictions

You can travel anywhere in Queensland for any reason. There is no limit on distance. You can stay overnight anywhere in Queensland for as many nights as you like.

La Niña -

More tropical Cyclones than normal. Prepare earlier - Rain expected a month earlier, more than 70% chance of above-average rainfall and increased flood risk.

Regional Update -

  • A high near New Zealand extends a weakening ridge over eastern Queensland. An inland trough extends offshore in the southeast, slowly moving northwards before stalling about the central inland on Wednesday. A southeasterly wind change over southeast districts, moves slowly northward reaching central coastal districts on Thursday, bringing a cooler change in its wake. The inland trough is expected to contract west later in the week as a ridge of high pressure builds along the east coast.
  • Cape York: Kennedy Developmental Road - The Lynd to Hughenden upgrade underway (Updated: 25/11/20).
  • Gregory Developmental Road: Pavement Repair, Greenvale / Southern Cross, Works both directions Until mid Dec (Updated: 25/11/20).
  • Fraser Island:

    • Fraser Island: A Wildfire is currently active on the island.
      Closed roads (From 25/11/20 until 4/12/20) include: Cornwells Road: between the Eastern Beach and Northern Road, Lake Wabby Road: between Cornwells Road and Northern Road, Postans (Poyungan) Road: 500m west from the Eastern Beach, Lake Garawongera Scenic Drive: west from Happy Valley. 
    • Ungowa boat ramp is closed to all vessels, vehicles and pedestrians. 
  • Slashers Creek Road, (East of Boulia) has reopened.
  • South West QLD : Tickalara Road, Orientos Road, Camerons Corner Road, Wompah Gate Road, closed due to Heavy rains/Flooding (Updated: 25/11/20).
