Australia

Border Update -

Closed to International Visitors (ex New Zealand)

Australia’s international borders are closed. Only Australian citizens, residents and immediate family members can travel to Australia.

Restrictions on New Zealand Visitors

The safe travel zone allowing quarantine free travel from New Zealand to Australia resumed at 14:00 AEDT on Sunday 31 January. From Thursday, 25 February 2021, any traveller from New Zealand who has been in Auckland (except for transit through the airport from a connecting flight) for any period over the previous 14-days, is not eligible to travel on a quarantine-free (green zone) flight. The hotspot designation for Auckland will be lifted at 11.59pm AEDT on Thursday, 11 March 2021. Green zone arrangements may resume from that time.

La Nina -

The Bureau of Meteorology announced the beginning of a La Niña on the 29th September 2020, which most likely means a wet summer period for eastern and northern regions. 

La Niña is a recurring event in our weather cycle, not to be confused with the warmer El Niño, that operates over periods of one to eight years. It manifests when strong equatorial trade winds change ocean currents, drawing cool water up to the surface in parts of the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a pile up of warm surface water east of Australia. This leads to a boost in convection that has a pronounced effect on the global climate.

Every La Niña event is different, but according to the BOM this time Australia is likely to see:

  • More rainfall in Eastern, Central, and Northern Australia
  • Decreased daytime temperatures south of the tropics
  • More tropical cyclones
  • Increased chance of widespread flooding
  • Longer, less intense heat waves in south east of Australia
  • Earlier First Rains across Northern Australia
  • Less risk of fires in areas that receive more rainfall


Northern Territory

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

All arrivals to the Northern Territory must complete 14 days of supervised quarantine at your own expense, if you have recently been in an active declared COVID-19 hot spot.

No Internal Travel Restrictions

There are no internal restrictions although any non-residents wanting to go into a remote community must still follow all the requirements of land councils and local communities, including checking if you need a land council permit to go there.

Regional Update -

  • A trough extends across the Simpson and Lasseter Districts, separating humid tropical air from the dry continental air to the south. This trough will drift slowly south until the next southerly surge pushes the trough northwards again over the weekend. Showers and thunderstorms will continue north of the trough. Thunderstorms closer to the trough will be slow moving and may have the potential to produce heavy rainfall. Warm and humid conditions will continue through out the Territory, a significant cool change will develop through central Australia on the weekend.
  • With La Niña conditions, the weather is looking wetter than average over the next couple of months.

Western Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

Effective Thursday, February 4, travel from NSW and VIC is permitted, subject to 14 days of self-quarantine and COVID-19 testing.

Travel from VIC into WA is now classified as ‘Low risk’.

Very low risk states and territories

(No community cases in 28 days)

  • Not required to quarantine
  • Currently includes TAS, SA, ACT, QLD, NSW and NT.

Low risk states and territories

(Less than 5 community cases per day on a 14-day rolling average)

  • Must self-quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises
  • Must present for a COVID-19 test on Day 11 if still in WA
  • Currently includes VIC.

Medium risk states and territories

  • Must self-quarantine/quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises.
  • No entry without an exemption through G2G PASS.
  • Covid tests required.
  • Must wear face masks until at an isolation location.
  • Currently Includes (N/A.)

Internal Travel Restrictions

Travel is now permitted throughout all regions within WA, except for entry into remote Aboriginal communities.

    • A broad trough lies from the Kimberley coast across inland WA.
    • Low/Moderate Fire risk.
    • Very Hot temps expected with a slight chance of showers/thunderstorms throughout the week.
    • Road Closed: Gibb River Rd from Mount Barnett to Pentecost River - Flooding (updated: 11-02-21).
  • Pilbara: 

    • A broad trough lies from the Kimberley coast across inland WA.
    • Fire Risk:
      -East Pilbara Coast: Low-Moderate
      -West Pilbara Coast: Low-Moderate
      -East Pilbara Inland: Low-Moderate
      -Ashburton Inland: Low-Moderate
      -Exmouth Gulf Coast: Low-Moderate
    • Mostly sunny with a slight chance of Showers throughout the week.
    • Road Closed: North West Coastal Hwy from Blowholes Road to Burkett Road - Flooding (Updated: 11/02/21).
  • South West WA:

    • A low pressure trough is deepening near the Central West coast and will move inland across the South West Land Division during Wednesday and Thursday. A new ridge of high pressure develops over the southwest of the State during Friday.
    • High Fire risk.
    • Quite extensive road works being undertaken on the South Coast Highway over October and November.

South Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

  • Restrictions on Australian travellers and those from NZ (who have been in a COVID-19 hotspot area). All travellers coming to South Australia are required to complete a Cross Border Travel Registration.
  • Border reopened to arrivals from the Greater Melbourne Area.
  • Travellers who arrived from Greater Melbourne and are subject to quarantine – if they have been to a high risk site are to remain segregated and isolated and contact SA Health regarding self-quarantine and COVID-19 testing requirements.

No Internal Travel Restrictions

Travel within South Australia is unrestricted. People are free to visit regional areas.

Regional Update -

  • A near stationary trough lies over the far northeast. A high pressure system south of the Bight will move east to be over the Tasman Sea by Wednesday night. A low pressure trough will move over the west of the State on Friday and over the remainder on Saturday.
  • Birdsville Inside Track Closed due to flooding (updated: 10/3/20).
  • Flinders ranges Floods closures (Southern Flinders), some tracks open with caution. (updated: 10/3/20).
  • Road Works: Road Sealing - Strzelecki Track (472km). The SA government will seal the first 50-kilometres, Starting just north of Lyndhurst (until late 2021).

Victoria

Border Update -

No Interstate Restrictions

  • From 11 Jan 2021, All travellers will need to apply for a permit to enter Victoria from anywhere in Australia.?

Regional Update - 

  • A high pressure system in the Bight will move across Tasmania and into the Tasman Sea by this evening, while a broad trough of low pressure develops inland. The trough will extend from inland NSW into northeast Victoria on Thursday, weakening on Friday as a cold front develops to the west. The cold front will strengthen Friday evening, crossing the State during Saturday.
  • Haunted Stream Track: Haunted Stream Track - Tambo Crossing is closed. DELWP are undertaking repairs. Reopening will be dependent on weather conditions.
  • High Country: Seasonal Closures have finished, with tracks reopening from 30/11/20.

Tasmania

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

Travellers who have only spent time in a low-risk area in the 14 days before arriving in Tasmania do not need to quarantine when they arrive, (excluding the high-risk areas : Currently includes: Auckland region, New Zealand).

No Internal Travel Restrictions

No restrictions on internal state travel.

Regional Update -

  • A high pressure system will move across Tasmania today and into the central Tasman Sea by Thursday. The high will extend a ridge over the State until northerly flow develops during Friday. A moderate strength cold front will cross the State during Saturday morning bringing a southwesterly flow in its wake.
  • Upgrading the Bruny Island Ferry Terminals. Construction of a second ferry berth to take place Sep 20 - Mar 21.

New South Wales/ ACT

Border Update -

No Interstate Restrictions

Travelers from other Australian States and Territories, who have not been overseas, may enter without applying for a permit. Guidelines in place for travellers from interstate hotspots.

No Internal Travel Restrictions

There is currently no limit on the distance that a person may travel, however NSW Health recommends non-essential domestic travel should be avoided.

Regional Update - 

  • A high pressure system lies over the Tasman Sea to the north of New Zealand, while a new high pressure system over the Great Australian Bight is extending a ridge into the south of the state. A broad area of low pressure extends over the north of the state, with a surface trough expected to develop during the day in the west. This pattern is drawing humid air down from the tropics, which is generating unsettled conditions in many districts. During the second half of the week the inland trough is forecast to deepen and move east as the new high moves from the Bight to the Tasman Sea. The next significant cool change looks set to arrive on the weekend.
  • Bogan Shire: Canonba Rd is closed - Flooding (updated: 11/2/2021).
  • Sturt National Park: Toona Gate Road is open with caution to 4WD's only (updated: 11/2/21).

Queensland

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

From 1am AEST Saturday 27 February 2021 all regions of Victoria have been removed as COVID-19 hotspots.

COVID-19 hotspots are updated regularly. Currently there are no hotspots.

No Internal Travel Restrictions

You can travel anywhere in Queensland for any reason. There is no limit on distance. You can stay overnight anywhere in Queensland for as many nights as you like.

La Niña -

More tropical Cyclones than normal. Prepare earlier - Rain expected a month earlier, more than 70% chance of above-average rainfall and increased flood risk.


Regional Update -

  • A trough extends from western parts into the southern interior, slowly moving offshore of the southeast on Wednesday. A high in the Tasman Sea extends a ridge along the east coast. A new high moves into the Tasman Sea later in the week, strengthening the ridge along the coast. A new trough moves into western parts on Saturday and begins to move slowly eastwards during the weekend.
  • Cape York: Burke Developmental Road - Closed at the Lynd due to Flooding (updated: 27/01/21).
  • Fraser Island:

    • Ngkala Rocks – Ngkala Rocks is currently passable (updated: 04/03/21).
    • Ungowa boat ramp is closed to all vessels, vehicles and pedestrians (updated: 10/03/21).
    • Most of the West coast is closed to beach driving (Updated 11/02/21).
    • North of Cornwells road and south of Woralie road: Temporarily CLOSED for maintenance. Please obey all signage and do not enter closed areas.
  • South West QLD : Jackson Wandoan Road, Jackson North - Floods - Vehicle access is closed to all vehicles and will remain closed until further notice (updated: 27/01/21).
