Australia

Border Update -

Closed to International Visitors (ex New Zealand)

  • Australia’s international borders are closed. Only Australian citizens, residents and immediate family members can travel to Australia.

Restrictions on New Zealand Visitors

  • From 19 April 2021, quarantine-free travel between Australia and New Zealand will commence.
  • Known as green zone travel, it will enable the movement of people between the two countries in a way that is safe and ensures that public health requirements are met.

La Nina -

The Bureau of Meteorology announced the beginning of a La Niña on the 29th September 2020, which most likely means a wet summer period for eastern and northern regions. 

La Niña is a recurring event in our weather cycle, not to be confused with the warmer El Niño, that operates over periods of one to eight years. It manifests when strong equatorial trade winds change ocean currents, drawing cool water up to the surface in parts of the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a pile up of warm surface water east of Australia. This leads to a boost in convection that has a pronounced effect on the global climate.

Every La Niña event is different, but according to the BOM this time Australia is likely to see:

  • More rainfall in Eastern, Central, and Northern Australia
  • Decreased daytime temperatures south of the tropics
  • More tropical cyclones
  • Increased chance of widespread flooding
  • Longer, less intense heat waves in south east of Australia
  • Earlier First Rains across Northern Australia
  • Less risk of fires in areas that receive more rainfall


Northern Territory

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

  • All arrivals to the Northern Territory must complete 14 days of supervised quarantine at your own expense, if you have recently been in an active declared COVID-19 hot spot. Currently some LGAs in VIC are an active hot spot (updated 11/06/21).
  • NSW:
    - Travellers to NT from NSW since 23 May 2021 or after who have been to any of the locations listed as ‘COVID-19 case locations’, may need to isolate/quarantine.
  • VIC:
    - Travellers to NT from VIC after 12 May 2021 must check Vic Health website.
    - Travellers to NT from VIC before 00:01 on 27 May 2021, who have been to a 'Tier 1 site' must also quarantine.
  • Vaccination status: If a person is fully vaccinated they are still required to follow all test and quarantine directions.

No Internal Travel Restrictions

  • There are no internal restrictions although any non-residents wanting to go into a remote community must still follow all the requirements of land councils and local communities, including checking if you need a land council permit to go there.

Regional Update -

  • A ridge of high pressure over central and northern Australia is directing cool and dry southeasterly winds throughout the Territory. This ridge will slowly weaken from Friday as a trough from Western Australia approaches. The approaching trough will cause temperatures in the south to gradually rise on the weekend. A cloud band will also develop over the southern districts on the weekend and will bring isolated light showers near the southern border, before clearing on Monday.
  • ‘The Dry’ season has started running from May- Oct, but with La Niña conditions, the weather is looking wetter than average over the next couple of months.

Western Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

Travel from all states, but VIC, into WA is now classified as ‘Very Low risk’. VIC is classified as ‘Medium risk’.

  • Very low risk states and territories 
    (No community cases in 28 days)
    - Not required to quarantine
    - Currently includes TAS, QLD, SA, ACT, NSW and NT.

 

  • Low risk states and territories
    (Less than 5 community cases per day on a 14-day rolling average)
    - Must self-quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises
    - Must present for a COVID-19 test on Day 11 if still in WA
    - Currently includes (N/A).

  • Medium risk states and territories
    - Must self-quarantine/quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises.
    - No entry without an exemption through G2G PASS.
    - Covid tests required.
    - Must wear face masks until at an isolation location.
    - Currently Includes VIC.

Internal Travel Restrictions

  • Travel is now permitted throughout all regions within WA, except for entry into remote Aboriginal communities.

  • Kimberley:

    • A trough over the western Pilbara will weaken during the day. A weak ridge of high pressure will develop over the south of the State over the weekend.
    • Low/Moderate Fire risk.
    • Hot temps (up to low 30s) expected.
    • Road Alert: Road Open to High Clearance 4WDs and trucks under 25t ONLY. Gibb River Rd from Mount Barnett to Pentecost River - Flooding (Updated: 11-06-21).
  • Pilbara: 

    • A trough over the western Pilbara will weaken during the day. A weak ridge of high pressure will develop over the south of the State over the weekend.
    • Fire Risk:
      - East Pilbara Coast: Low-Moderate
      - West Pilbara Coast: Low-Moderate
      - East Pilbara Inland: Low-Moderate
      - Ashburton Inland: Low-Moderate
      - Exmouth Gulf Coast: Low-Moderate
    • Mostly sunny throughout the week, into low 30s.
    • Road Flooded: Nanutarra Munjina Rd - Nameless Valley Dr and Bingarn Rd - Flooding - Open with Extreme Caution - 4WDs Only -  (Updated: 11-06-21).
  • South West WA:

    • A trough over the north and east of the South West Land Division will move into the Goldfields and Eucla during today and Saturday, with a weak high pressure ridge developing in its wake. A cold front will approach the southwest corner of the State late Sunday.
    • Fire Risk: Geographe: Low-Moderate
      Leeuwin: Low-Moderate
      Nelson: Low-Moderate
    • Quite extensive road works being undertaken on the South Coast Highway over October and November.
    • Road Closed: Muir Hwy closed at the Kent River Bridge, Perillup - Flooding. Road to remain CLOSED to all vehicles, Repairs to the side track are progressing. Detour available.

South Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

  • Travellers are permitted to enter providing they have completed the Cross Border Travel Registration Form prior to entry into SA.
  • Effective 7:45 pm 28 May 2021
    Travellers arriving from Victoria from 7:45 pm 28 May 2021 are not permitted to enter South Australia (Exceptions may apply).

No Internal Travel Restrictions

  • Travel within South Australia is unrestricted. People are free to visit regional areas.

La Niña -

More rainfall during spring and summer, wetter soils and an increased chance of flash floods. Reduced bushfire risk with reduced extreme heat waves. More rainfall expected in the north/central areas of South Australia.

Regional Update -

  • A low pressure system is located over the eastern states. A high pressure ridge over the west of SA will move slowly eastwards over the next few days. A trough of low pressure will move into the far west of the state on Sunday then move eastwards early next week, ahead of a possible low pressure system developing near southern coasts in the middle of next week.
  • Birdsville Inside Track Closed due to flooding (updated: 11/06/21).
  • North East of state - Floods update, Most tracks have reopened. Birdsville Track - Mungeranie to Marree Open to all vehicles (updated: 11/06/21).
  • Road Works: Road Sealing - Strzelecki Track (472km). The SA government will seal the first 50-kilometres, Starting just north of Lyndhurst (until late 2021).

Border Update -

La Niña -

More rainfall during spring and summer, wetter soils and an increased chance of flash floods. Reduced bushfire risk with reduced extreme heat waves.

Regional Update - 

  • A broad, complex low pressure system over southeastern NSW will move gradually offshore early this morning, before tracking rapidly southwards and into eastern Bass Strait by Friday night. The low will remain near stationary during Saturday, before weakening and moving into the Tasman Sea during Sunday. A short-lived ridge of high pressure will extend across the State on Sunday and Monday, while another low pressure system forms in the Bight.
  • Haunted Stream Track: Haunted Stream Track - Tambo Crossing is closed. DELWP are undertaking repairs. Reopening will be dependent on weather conditions.
  • Extensive road closures throughout the South East of the state. A weather event has resulted in widespread floods. Drive to conditions. Some detours in place (updated: 11/06/21).
  • High Country: Seasonal Closures are coming into effect, with tracks to close from the long weekend in June 2021.
  • Alpine National Park: The following roads/tracks are subject to early seasonal road closures from 8 May 2021: Golden Ridge Track, Kelly Lane, King Spur Track, Long Spur Track, Shepherds Creek Track, Davies Plain Track, and Kings Plain Track.

Tasmania

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

  • Travellers who have only spent time in a low-risk area in the 14 days before arriving in Tasmania do not need to quarantine when they arrive, (excluding the high-risk areas).

Regional Update -

  • A complex area of low pressure over the southeast of the mainland remains the dominant feature today. The low area off the New South Wales coast will move to the northeast of Tasmania this afternoon, then gradually move to the east of the state during Saturday, before finally moving away over the Tasman Sea on Sunday as an area of high pressure builds over eastern Australia. The high will move slowly east on Monday as a new low deepens over the Bight.
  • Tasman Highway (A3) Closed Southwards from Gladstone Rd (B82), Herrick intersection, to Forest Lodge Road, Pyengana, intersection (near North George River crossing).
  • Upgrading the Bruny Island Ferry Terminals. Construction of a second ferry berth to take place Dec 20 - Jul 21.

New South Wales/ ACT

Border Update -

No Interstate Restrictions

  • Travelers from other Australian States and Territories, who have not been overseas, may enter without applying for a permit (Excluding Greater Melbourne and QLD Confirmed locations). Guidelines in place for travellers from interstate hotspots.
  • You must complete an NSW entry declaration form if you are entering NSW after 5pm on 27 April 2021, and in the previous 14 days have been in any hotspot suburbs.

No Internal Travel Restrictions

  • There is currently no limit on the distance that a person may travel, however NSW Health recommends non-essential domestic travel should be avoided.

Regional Update - 

  • A deep low pressure system, with multiple centres, lies over southeast Australia, while a strong high is centred south of Tasmania. This system is bringing cold air from the Southern Ocean into New South Wales, which will linger over the next day or so before the low slowly moves east on the weekend. Behind this, a weak ridge of high pressure is expected to develop over the region, promoting a return to mostly fine weather until the middle of next week.
  • Flood Closures reopening throughout the North West of state between Broken Hill - Wanaaring - and Cameron’s Corner - Exercise caution - some closures in place. (Updated: 11/06/21).

Queensland

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

  • Greater Melbourne is a declared COVID-19 hotspot.
  • From 1am AEST Friday 11 June 2021, the Local Government Areas that make up Greater Melbourne in Victoria are declared COVID-19 hotspots.
  • Anyone who has been in Greater Melbourne in the last 14 days will not be allowed to enter Queensland, except for a limited range of people who can enter for essential purposes.

La Niña -

More tropical Cyclones than normal. Prepare earlier - Rain expected a month earlier, more than 70% chance of above-average rainfall and increased flood risk.

Regional Update -

  • A weak ridge extends over southern Queensland and along the tropical east coast, and will persist for the next several days. A low pressure system over eastern New South Wales will move southeast into the Tasman Sea and further away from Queensland with winds easing over the south of the state. A trough will develop over the eastern inland over the weekend and then drift slowly westwards, with moist and weakly unstable air spreading westwards.
  • Cape York: Peninsula Developmental Road - at Archer River Road.
  • Fraser Island:

    • Areas of concern – Eurong beachfront, Eli Creek, Maheno, Lake McKenzie, Waddy Point beachfront Wathumba and Orchid Beach. Due to increased human-wongari interactions, extra vigilance is required in these areas.
    • Most of the West coast is closed to beach driving (Updated 11/06/21).
    • Look and listen for aircraft landing and taking off along the eastern beach. Follow direction from the ground control crew.
    • Fraser Island report - 1st June, 2021.
  • South West QLD : Camerons Corner Road, Cameron Corner - Floods - Vehicle access is closed to all vehicles and will remain closed until further notice. This includes most roads from Thargomindah  (updated: 11/06/21).
