But before we dive into the full list of activities and displays at the show, let’s take a look at the growing offroad touring scene and how Australian travellers are shaping the demand for capable caravans, hybrids and camper trailers.

Offroad touring is bigger than ever

Australia’s outdoor adventure scene is evolving fast. More caravanners and campers are joining four-wheel drivers, leaving highways behind to tackle tough tracks and remote destinations that demand capable vehicles and trailers.

While Australians have been towing campers and caravans for more than half a century, today’s offroad-ready trailers are a world apart from the old units, reflecting a shift from niche to mainstream as more builders respond to the needs of modern tourers. Whether it’s a full-blown caravan with four walls, a roof and even a washing machine, or a classic camper trailer with a canvas tent, modern setups strike a balance between offroad capability and comfort, with solar panels, lithium batteries and efficient water systems becoming standard inclusions in most setups.

And growing alongside Australia’s touring industry, the National 4X4 Outdoors Show has also expanded over the last five years. The event team commented: “This expansion is specific to the offroad caravan and camper models. We’ve seen growth in the new businesses that are launching in this space, and established businesses are leaning deeper into the offroad caravan and camper market.”

The buyer profile is also shifting. Post-pandemic, younger families and dedicated offroaders are entering the market, broadening the traditional grey nomad demographic.

For many four-wheel drivers, the tow vehicle and trailer are part of a complete touring system: upgraded suspension, recovery gear, long-range tanks and integrated power solutions are now paired with caravans and hybrids built for serious offroad travel.
