Australia

Border Update -

Closed to International Visitors (ex New Zealand)
  • Australia’s international borders are closed. Only Australian citizens, residents and immediate family members can travel to Australia.
Restrictions on New Zealand Visitors
  • From 19 April 2021, quarantine-free travel between Australia and New Zealand will commence.
    Known as green zone travel, it will enable the movement of people between the two countries in a way that is safe and ensures that public health requirements are met.

La Nina -

The Bureau of Meteorology announced the beginning of a La Niña on the 29th September 2020, which most likely means a wet summer period for eastern and northern regions. 

La Niña is a recurring event in our weather cycle, not to be confused with the warmer El Niño, that operates over periods of one to eight years. It manifests when strong equatorial trade winds change ocean currents, drawing cool water up to the surface in parts of the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a pile up of warm surface water east of Australia. This leads to a boost in convection that has a pronounced effect on the global climate.

Every La Niña event is different, but according to the BOM this time Australia is likely to see:

  • More rainfall in Eastern, Central, and Northern Australia
  • Decreased daytime temperatures south of the tropics
  • More tropical cyclones
  • Increased chance of widespread flooding
  • Longer, less intense heat waves in south east of Australia
  • Earlier First Rains across Northern Australia
  • Less risk of fires in areas that receive more rainfall

 

Northern Territory

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • All arrivals to the Northern Territory must complete 14 days of supervised quarantine at your own expense, if you have recently been in an active declared COVID-19 hot spot. Currently all LGAs in NSW are an active hot spot (updated 04/08/21).
  • NSW:
    - Travellers to NT from NSW since 19 May 2021 or after who have been to any of the locations listed as ‘COVID-19 case locations’, need to isolate/quarantine - exemptions could apply.
  • SA:
    - The CHO has repealed all of the hotspots across SA for the purposes of travel to the NT.
  • QLD:
    - Greater Brisbane and south to the NSW border inc Gold Coast LGAs are now a declared hotspot.
  • Vaccination status: If a person is fully vaccinated they are still required to follow all test and quarantine directions.
No Internal Travel Restrictions
  • There are no internal restrictions although any non-residents wanting to go into a remote community must still follow all the requirements of land councils and local communities, including checking if you need a land council permit to go there.

Regional Update -

  • A strong ridge of high pressure over central Australia is causing a cooler change to move north through the Territory. This will bring less humid conditions to the Top End for the second half of the week.
  • ‘The Dry’ season has started running from May- Oct, but with La Niña conditions, the weather is looking wetter than average over the next couple of months.

Western Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Before travelling to WA, complete a mandatory G2G PASS registration and declaration.
    Travellers from all states must look at the ‘State Risk Ratings’. NSW, QLD, SA, VIC are classified as ‘Medium risk’, Vic is Classified as ‘Low risk’.
  • WA has introduced a hard border with SA, NSW, QLD and VIC  following the evolving COVID-19 situations and outbreak and you are not allowed to travel without an exemption.
  • All arrivals into WA from QLD since Saturday 19 June 2021 who have been to any of the listed exposure sites during the relevant times are required to:
    - get a COVID-19 test immediately (within 48 hours)
    - self-quarantine for 14 days after date of exposure
    - present for a day 11 COVID-19 test
    - wear masks when transiting to self-quarantine premises or to get a COVID-19 test
  • Very low risk states and territories
    (No community cases in 28 days)
    - Not required to quarantine
    - Currently includes TAS and NT.
  • Low risk states and territories
    (Less than 5 community cases per day on a 14-day rolling average)
    - Must self-quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises
    - Must present for a COVID-19 test on Day 11 if still in WA
    - Currently includes ACT.
  • Medium risk states and territories
    - Must self-quarantine/quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises.
    - No entry without an exemption through G2G PASS.
    - Covid tests required.
    - Must wear face masks until at an isolation location.
    - Currently Includes NSW, VIC, QLD, SA.

Internal Travel Restrictions
  • Travel is now permitted throughout all regions within WA, except for entry into remote Aboriginal communities.

    • North Kimberley Coast: High

  • Pilbara: 

    • A high pressure ridge is strengthening through southern parts of the State, with fresh and gusty east to southeasterly winds over northern parts.
    • Fire Risk:
    • East Pilbara Coast: Low-Moderate
    • West Pilbara Coast: High
    • East Pilbara Inland: Low-Moderate
    • Ashburton Inland: High
    • Exmouth Gulf Coast: Low-Moderate
    • Mostly sunny throughout the week, into the mid 20s to low 30s.
    • Road Flooded: Nanutarra Munjina Rd - Nameless Valley Dr and Bingarn Rd - Flooding - Open with Extreme Caution - 4WDs Only -  (Updated: 21-07-21).
  • South West WA:

    • A high pressure system lies over southern parts of the State and will move into the Bight during Thursday and Friday before a cold front approaches the west coast on Saturday.
    • Fire Risk: Geographe: Low-Moderate
      Leeuwin: Low-Moderate
      Nelson: Low-Moderate
    • Quite extensive road works being undertaken on the South Coast Highway over October and November.
    • Road Closed: Muir Hwy closed at the Kent River Bridge, Perillup - Flooding. Road to remain CLOSED to all vehicles, Repairs to the side track are progressing. Detour available.

South Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Travellers are permitted to enter providing they have completed the Cross Border Travel Registration Form prior to entry into SA.
  • Border restrictions are in place. From 19 July 2021, any person arriving in South Australia who has been in the state of NSW (Excluding Broken Hill LGA), ACT, VIC or Greater Brisbane, are currently prohibited from entering SA - Exceptions apply.

More rainfall during spring and summer, wetter soils and an increased chance of flash floods. Reduced bushfire risk with reduced extreme heat waves. More rainfall expected in the north/central areas of South Australia.

Regional Update -

  • A high pressure ridge will be maintained over the north of South Australia this week, with a southwesterly airstream to the south. A centre of high pressure will develop over the west of the State later Friday and then move eastwards to be over New South Wales on the weekend.
  • Birdsville Inside Track Closed due to flood damage (updated: 04/08/21).
  • North East of state - Floods update, Most tracks have reopened. Cordillo Downs Road - Arrabury turn off to SA/QLD Border, Open to 4WD and Heavy Vehicles (updated: 04/08/21).
  • Road Works: Road Sealing - Strzelecki Track (472km). The SA government will seal the first 50-kilometres, Starting just north of Lyndhurst (until late 2021).

Victoria

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • From 11:59pm on 26 February 2021, you will need to apply for a permit to enter Victoria from anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.?Apply for a permit at the Service Victoria?website.
  • NSW is now a ‘Extreme Risk Zone’ under Victoria’s Travel Permit System.
  • ACT and Greater Brisbane are now Red Zones and SA is an Orange Zone.

Regional Update - 

  • A low pressure system to the east of Tasmania will move to the east today as a strong high pressure system builds over southern Western Australia. The high will slowly drift eastwards over the next few days, moving across South Australia during Friday and then over New South Wales on Saturday.
  • Haunted Stream Track: Haunted Stream Track - Tambo Crossing is closed. DELWP are undertaking repairs. Reopening will be dependent on weather conditions.
  • Extensive road closures throughout the South East of the state. A weather event has resulted in widespread floods. Drive to conditions. Some detours in place (updated: 11/06/21).
  • High Country: Seasonal Closures are in effect, Check the list of tracks to close from the 17th June 2021.

Tasmania

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Travellers who have only spent time in a low-risk area in the 14 days before arriving in Tasmania do not need to quarantine when they arrive, (excluding the high-risk areas).
  • Low-risk:
    - ACT, NT, QLD, SA, WA, VIC
  • Medium Risk:
    - (N/A)
  • High Risk:
    - SA*, NSW, QLD(Greater Brisbane)*
    *= a number of premises have also been declared as high-risk

La Niña -

Regional Update -

  • A low pressure system well off the east coast, produces a southwesterly flow over Tasmania as it retreats eastwards into the Tasman Sea. Winds tend more westerly on Thursday after a cold front brushes by the south on Wednesday night. The westerly flow continues until a weak cold front crosses the state on Saturday afternoon, followed by a ridge of high pressure extending from a high over eastern Australia.
  • Upgrading the Bruny Island Ferry Terminals. Construction of a second ferry berth to take place Dec 20 - Jul 21.

New South Wales/ ACT

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Travelers from VIC, QLD and SA are not allowed to enter into NSW. Guidelines in place for travellers from interstate hotspots. Updated 04-08-21
  • You must complete an NSW entry declaration form if you are entering NSW after 5pm on 27 April 2021, and in the previous 14 days have been in any interstate hotspot suburbs.

Internal Travel Restrictions
  • There is currently a 10km limit on the distance that a person may travel in Sydney, NSW Health recommends non-essential domestic travel should be avoided. 
  • Stay-at-home orders are being introduced until at least 30 July for those who live in Greater Sydney including the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour.

Regional Update - 

  • A high pressure system over the northern Tasman Sea will move slowly east today and tomorrow. A cold front is crossing the far southwest this morning, and will move across the state, reaching northeastern parts on Thursday. This front will bring windy conditions to the ranges and rainfall to the western slopes as it crosses the state.
  • Flood Closures reopening throughout the North West of state between Broken Hill - Wanaaring - and Cameron’s Corner - Exercise caution - some closures in place. (Updated: 28/07/21).

Queensland

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Interstate restrictions are in place. All travellers must complete a Queensland entry pass to enter Queensland from anywhere in Australia or New Zealand
  • From 23/07/21, NSW, SA and VIC are COVID-19 hotspots. (Updated:04/08/21).

Internal Travel Restrictions
  • Internal Travel Restrictions are in place within Greater Brisbane. Greater Brisbane is in lockdown until 08-08-21 at least.

La Niña -

More tropical Cyclones than normal. Prepare earlier - Rain expected a month earlier, more than 70% chance of above-average rainfall and increased flood risk.

Regional Update -

  • A high over the southern Coral Sea extends a weak ridge over the north of the state. A cold front has moved off the southeast coast and extends a trough along the east coast. A new high moving eastward across southern Australia will extend a strengthening ridge and a cool, dry air mass across the state in the wake
