HEMA for iphone

There are lots of negative comments about HEMA maps using their hardware but HEMA maps for your phone is very good for showing you where you are, what is around you including rest stops, side roads etc in the outback. In my opinion it is the best out there.

It’s basically a raster map. Ie it’s the equivalent of the paper map but shows your position in relation on the map. It won’t tell you which way to go but in the outback if you are relying on a digital map to tell you where to go and do t know where you are without,, then basically you are an idiot and will be a statistic in short order. You need to be aware of where you, use your trip metre to know how far along a road you have travelled and whether that is reasonable compared to your paper map expectation.

I have travelled widely in Australia over many many years. . HEMA paper map book (for context) and Hema digital for iPhone is great. I bought the HEMA app 10 years plus ago and I still get the updates and it works great.

By all means get other apps too but every time I travel with other people with other apps, it’s always me telling people when roads or stops are coming up. HEMA iPhone maps always wins.

I have traveled very remote locations and trust the app and the paper maps together.

Hema 4wd Maps App is downgrade over Hema Explorer

I purchased the Explorer app for $50 and importing GPX files was easy. Maps were clear. App was easy to use. Now it doen't work and I was forced to buy the $99 Hema 4wd Map app. Yet graphics is worse. Slower than old app. Plus I cant seem to work out a way to import my GPX files to it. THis app is usless and contacting apple for a refund as this app is a joke. Even if it was free I wouldnt bother with it.

Stick with Paper Maps

I went from the old HX7 to the (current at the time) app. It was slow, glitchy and not user friendly. When HEMA cancelled the old app they did not offer a free change over to the remaining app despite paying for the old one. Their phone support service is shocking. I was a big fan of HEMA, and still purchase their paper maps, but their apps are shocking, which is surprising given apps are the way forward considering phones are so capable these days. I'll never buy another HEMA app or GPS unit again.
