Devonport, Tasmania, took home the gold in this year’s Australia’s Top Tourism Town awards hosted by the Australian Tourism Industry Council (ATIC) at Parliament House in Canberra earlier this month.

Victoria’s Bendigo took home the silver and Queensland’s Roma the bronze.

The Top Tourism Town awards recognise Australian towns with a population above 5000 that offer amazing visitor experiences and are committed to working collectively to increase visitation to its region. The Top Small Tourism Town awards recognise those with a population above 1500 and the Top Tiny Tourism Town awards those with a population under 1500.

There are three main award categories (and other subcategories) which all attract a gold, silver and bronze winner: the Top Tourism Town, Top Small Tourism Town and Top Tiny Tourism Town.

Devonport is well known for being the Tasmanian port for the Spirit of Tasmania ferry and is a unique coastal gem tucked between the ocean and fertile agricultural land that forms part of Tasmania’s famous food bowl, producing everything from fruit and vegetables through to honey, herbs, meat and more.

With plenty to see in the town itself and Tasmania being a popular summer destination for Aussies and international tourists alike, we can see why Devonport took home the gold. Activities to enjoy in the area include the Tiagarra Cultural Centre, the Bass Strait Maritime Centre and the new Sky to Sea Light Show. The Paranaple Convention Centre is another noted feature, bringing many business events to the region.

Western Australia’s Exmouth took home the gold in the Small Tourism Town category, with Victoria’s Daylesford nabbing the silver and Richmond — another Tassie town — taking home the bronze.

The winners of the Tiny Tourism Town category were Huskisson on NSW’s south coast taking out the gold, Stanley — yet another Tassie town — taking home the silver and Gundaroo in the ACT the bronze.

We think all the above towns are gems in their own right and have deservedly been recognised at this year’s awards. You can find out more about all the winners here.
