When you’re out exploring Australia’s wide and beautiful landscapes, it’s essential that you’re aware of all the right planning and preparation needed to ensure your safety.

And to help with that, we’re excited to announce that we’re launching a new initiative — Hema Safe — which we’ve designed to help give you all the tools, tips, tricks and expert insights so you can keep hitting the road safely and confidently.

Our inaugural event will be taking place on 8 September, and it’s something we’ve been working on for some time. But before we get into the details of this exciting event, let’s discuss the what and why of it all.

What is Hema Safe?

Hema Safe is an extension of our iconic Hema Maps brand and is designed to champion awareness and education for consumers — you — in the touring and 4WD market.

The program will offer expert advice across all areas of touring and safety, bringing together experts from the industry to give you easy access to information and hands-on lessons in the best practices to follow to keep yourself and others safe.

The courses are designed to ensure your entire adventure is safely executed, and will cover everything from trip planning at home, how to safely pack your 4WD and anything you’re towing … through to safe driving and towing techniques and the best ways to camp — whether that’s at a caravan park or an off-grid campsite in a remote corner of Australia.

Why have we created it?

We love sharing the best and most challenging places to explore in Australia and showing off our own adventures, but it’s equally important to ensure that every person who heads off on a trip is doing so in the safest way possible.

With the creation of Hema Safe, we look to be an advocate and voice for our fellow Aussie adventurers and one of our core goals is to work towards the creation of sensible and practical legislation that will make travelling this great country much safer for us all.

This isn’t something we can do alone, and Hema Maps will be partnered with other companies who have similar goals — working together to establish safer outcomes for their customers and encourage continual and innovative improvement within the four-wheel driving and touring industry.

The inaugural event: 8 September 2024

Our first-ever Hema Safe event has been in the works for some time, and we’re excited to announce that it will be kicking off on Sunday 8 September 2024 and will be held in Clayton, Victoria, with the support of our event partner, Bosch Australia.

The theme of this event will be ‘Towing Safety’ — which is an important topic for newbies and seasoned travellers alike — and it is open to the public with free entry.

There’ll be a whole range of activities, masterclasses and presentations from our expert partners, including:

  • Caravan and tow vehicle weigh-ins, presented by Weigh Station. Please note that there will be limited spaces, and bookings will be essential.
  • Masterclasses on towing weight guidelines, understanding all the weight jargon (GVM, GTM, GCM, etc.), legislation, how to pack your trailer and weight optimisation.
  • Learn how to correctly reverse and hitch your van, camper or trailer.

There will be great displays from Hema Safe partners, including Bosch Australia, MSA 4x4 Accessories and Tough Dog 4WD Suspension.

And a caravan, camper trailer and vehicle showcase, including brands such as New Age Caravans, Harvok, Zone RV and Wonderland RV.

Possible in the new year I hope to embark on a trip to the Innaminka/Birdsville region via Camerons Corner. I will be travelling by SUV only and have designed a card to hand to Police or a prominate location which has vehicle details, eg make, colour, rego. My name, address,. mobile phone nos (I will be taking 2 on different networks), CB radio callsign, place of departure and approx. date of arrival at next destinaton, 3x emergency contacts, plus medical info, plus a card showing what meds I’m on. This may be helpful to new trippers.
