Its alpine destinations and tracks are legendary – Wonnangatta, the Dargo High Plains, Blue Rag, Mount Stirling – these are not for the faint-hearted or inexperienced. It’s country where making a mistake can be fatal, or at the least, very expensive. Not only is the driving challenge there, but the scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. It offers rugged mountains, magnificent snowfields, quaint country towns, powerful rivers and a rich history kept alive by cattleman’s huts and ruins.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003eMost 4WD tracks in the region are closed from approximately the week after the long weekend in June until the Melbourne Cup Day long weekend. So November to May is the prime time to visit. Whenever you visit, always keep a close eye on the weather and fire danger conditions. For the same reason, don’t set yourself an unrealistic itinerary – most of it’s slow going.
